Autograph Letter Signed, "J.M. Wiswell" 4p. quarto, ‘Battery Hill’ Fairfax County, Virginia, August 9, 1861, with cover addressed to his sister in Maine, both cover and letter bear his stencil "J.M. Wiswell Co. I 4th Reg.t M.M.", Wiswell later served as major in the 14th Maine Infantry, it reads in part: "...They say the Regt has got to be reorganized and take an oath of allegiance, now there is not twenty men in the whole regt, that will do so...We had six pieces of cannon (a Battery) given to this Regt. but they have made them over to a N.J. Regt. the men say the reason is that we do not belong to the U.S. and so they took them away...We are encamped...on the brow of a hill, with the Battery on the hill, it commands the Fairfax road for about a mile..Capt. Whitcomb is disliked more and more by the men, he seems to grow worse everyday. I never saw such a fool...R.H. Gray escaped from the enemy, he was in their hands just a week, he was thirty three hours from the time he started until he got into safe hands again...
