Lukens, 3rd New Jersey, with franked patriotic cover by GENERAL CHARLES H. VAN WYCK, the letter reads in part: "...we have no sleep...we could hear the pickets firing on one another...one company [of cavalry] from Philadelphia was to attack Annandale...our regiment advanced a mile on the Columbia Pike...heard firing on the left of us, they had attacked the rifle battalion...had to go back to the crossroads...all drawn up in was line of battle...the secessionist captured six of them. The rebels drove our pickets in...[we] had a skirmish with them, there was five cannon shots fired at us. They tried to drive us from the crossoroads but the blues was too strong for them. At 11 o’clock they made another charge at us but it was no use...the enemy had retreated from Fairfax courthouse...have got entrenchments throw’d up all around our camp and the fort is to built inside..."
