BARNARD, John (1815-1882) Union brigadier general and Grant’s Chief of Engineers. Although deaf from birth, he served 48 years in the Army Engineers. Manuscript Document Signed, "J.G. Barnard B. Genl. & Chf. Engr." 1p. quarto, and reads "Circular, Hd. Quarters of Engineers, Washington, November 22, 1861, Officers of the Engineers will make a return to this office of the quantity of intrenching tools in charge of the working parties at the different works..."
