DELAFIELD, Richard (1798-1873) Brigadier General. Delafield graduated from the Military Academy first in the class of 1818 and was reportedly the first cadet assigned a standing according to merit. He went on to be Superintendent at West Point twice 1838-1845, and 1856-1861. When the war broke out he joined the Union effort and was made Brigadier General and Chief of Engineers. He was brevetted Major General for meritorious and distinguished service during the war. He retired from the service in 1866 "having been borne on the Army Register over forty-five years. Manuscript Letter Signed, "Richd. Delafield" 1p. quarto, Engineer Department, Washington, D.C., December 9, 1864, addressed to Colonel Abbot, and reads " I take pleasure in forwarding herewith a copy of a pamphlet in relation to the Report upon teh Delta of the Mississippi River, by Professor A. Ritter v. Burg of the Polytechnic Institute of Vienna, sent by the State Department to this Office..." VG.
