A rare war-date Allegheny arsenal letter penned by "John Beck" 1-1/2p. quarto, on very colorful George Washington patriotic stationery, Allegheny County, Penn., July 8, 1861, to a member of the U. S. Congress, reads, in part: "...I take the liberty of addressing you from this place where I have been at work for Uncle Sam, making equipments for the Army for 6 weeks. This Co. is like Granville considerable & Abolitinised but I dare defend the National Democracy been here. I find that the Douglas Democrats here think well of you at least those who have read your speeches. I have also endeavored to inform them about you and have told them that you would always be found speaking for the Union. I hope you will not have a stormy session as some you have sat in but I know the 12 District will have no cause to regret that in these trying times you represent them. Since I left home several of my friends have wrote me that my successor does not attend to the Office as I did and that my enemies admit it out of that hereafter. I wish while you are in Washington you would document me at this place and if you would send me the Eulogies on the Hon. S.A. Douglas either in the Senate or House you would do me a very great favor..." VG.
