War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sgt. Jacob S. Winans, Co. H, 38th Penn. Vols., Camp Tenally, Aug. 6, [1861] concerning marching towards the Rebels after First Bull Run, reading, in part: "…We had a hard march yesterday. We had to march about seven miles through dust 3 inches deep and under the most scorching sun that I ever experienced. The 8th & 11th Regiments went before us and the 7th & 10th followed us. The road for the last 3 or 4 miles was strewed with men who had given out and laid down…all of our reg. did not get in until late at night…The enemy's advance guard is only about 4 miles from here. Their camp can be seen from a hill not far from here…". The original cover without stamp is included. Winans served throughout the war in the 38th and fought in the battles of Gaines Mills, Antietam and Fredericksburg. VG.
