Autograph Letter Signed, "Franklin Williams" 2-1/2p. octavo, Roxbury, Massachusetts, August 26, 1862, addressed to Lieut. Julius M. Swain, 39th Mass and Signal Corps officer, and reads in part: "...In behalf of the band of Teachers connected with the First Universalist Socity of this city, with which you have so long and faithfully been connected, I take pleasure in presenting you with this Revolver. Your noble determination to go manfully forward, and do your share, in repeling this wicked rebellion, and in maintaining the Government and institutions of our beloved country has laid us under renewed obligations and we could not witness your departure, without presenting you with some serviceable token of our esteem. It would not at first sight seem just the weapon that a company of professed christians should present to a brother, but we feel sure, that our long forebearance has been of little avail, and at last, we aer obliged to fall back upon the ancient right of self defense and vindicate our manhood or else behold ourselves made slaves with our cherished social political and religious institutions utterly and forever lost..."
