Autograph Letter Signed, "Joseph F. Shaw" 4p. octavo, on patriotic lettersheet, New York, October 23, with "Remember Ellsworth" cover, it reads in part: "...I heard that I was not a going to get home till sometime next winter on account of my conduct which I was home this time unelss the boat comes on. If I dont I know who to blame for it. You know Jim that I did nothing bad only in going to see Mary contrary to her wishes but I shall do that agian whenever I do get hom and I don’t care whether it is this winter or next. That was pretty good shooting of the Home Guards and so you have resigned have you well I think it was the best thing you could do as they are only blackguarded...there is no use in you writing to me about religion for I could not keep it, you know yourself what kind of temper I got..."
