Autograph Letter Signed by Charles Sweetser 25th Maine Infantry, 8p. octavo, on "Union Forever" lettersheet, Washington D.C., October 22, 1862, and reads in part: "...I never saw any palce where it looked so much liek a garden as the state of N. Jersey the ground is bud and jsut the color of brick dust...the trees were very green...I went over the city some saw the fort and Washingtons monument that is a splendid thing is I should think about 150 ft high built of white marble round and about 20ft. in diameter. It stands upon a hill and is a great ornament to the otherwise unattractive city. The city is large and built entirely of brick...The men hate our new orderly worse than they ever did me and I am glad of it for it makes the office which he has no business...and the men who were so uneasy have found out that I am not the worst man that ever lived..."
