A touching Civil War-date love poem written in period pencil on the verso of "The Girl I left Behind Me", stationery. The ink inscribed letter, 1p. 8vo., is by a certain William [n. p.], June 1, [1862] to his love Eliza apologizing for not being able to see her that weekend because of torrential rains. William then attempts to make up for his not coming by writing this poem that reads, in full: "Look at the girl I left behind me on first page. This reminds me of the quality times that used to be but are no more. Shall they be so again? I say yes. I think I can enjoy myself with the girl I love not the one I left behind me for I have left none. If you see fit so write a line to me you may do so & I will get it in Friday's mail." Minor soiling, else very good.
