A good war-date North Carolina citizen's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written in ink by Thomas L. Bell, Statesville, [N. C.], Mar. 5, 1862 to "dear Abbey" concerning war news before joining the army, reading, in part: "…I read a letter from Mr. Connor today. He says 56 of Co. 'A' petitioned the Capt to join the navy…also that there is a good deal of dissatisfaction in the company because Bill Mc[?] has been appointed 3 Lieut. in place of Finley…you wished to know in one of your letters if we received the Richmond papers. We do not get the Examiner regularly have not had one since Tuesday but get the Enquirer twice a week…I have thought often of Mr. Foster's family since hearing a battle is anticipated. I suppose they have give up their good homes…".
