Autograph Letter Signed, "John Sumpman" 45th Pennsylvania Infantry, 4p. octavo, on "Liberty and Union" stationary, St. Johns Island, South Carolina, April 8, 1862, and reads in part: "...we reached here without any difficulty though we did not think we would when we started as the island was thick with rebels. A few days before we landed we marched across the island a distance of about 25 miles and never seen a rebel. They all cleared off othe island nad all that did not they have to stay there. They say that there is only about 50 rebel cavalry in the island now. Our pickets brought in 12 of them yesterday and 12 of their horses and 7 more this morning with their horses and saddles...It would surprise to see the way the troops are coming in here you would think the coutnry is all alive with guerillas..."
