14th Vermont on the Road to Chantilly

Autograph Letter Signed, "L.D. Ross" Asst. Surgeon, 14th Vermont Infantry, 4p. octavo, with cover, and reads in part: "...Our Regt. has had to move again & now is out on the road to Chantilly some three miles from here. I’ve just come back from there...This makes the 11th move we have made since we touched the ‘Sacred Soil’ In my opinion all the 9 mos men are sent here for is to enrich this sacred but poor soil...Joe Wade’s substitute’s about played out. He can’t stand it much longer. These old men can’t begin with the boys when you come to marching with knapsack & c. or learning the drill or manual of arms...Do you think from what you read that the war is near its close? I don’t & wont be until Washington is burned out like a sooty chimney. That is the worst hot bed of secession there is, worse than Richmond to us for we know what the people of Richmond will do but Washington we don’t...The Patriotism of these men & all the soldiers here abouts is about played out...." Fine.
