Union Naval Officer Who Demanded The Surrender of

Sign In to see what this sold for

A great war-date CDV of Union navy Captain Theodorus Bailey commander of the USS Cayuga. Bailey's ship was one of Admiral Farragut's fleet that arrived at the docks of New Orleans on April 25, 1862 after running the Rebel batteries below the city. As Farragut's second in command it was Bailey who along with Lt. George Perkins demanded the surrender of the Crescent City on at fateful spring day. Though threatened with bodily harm both he and Perkins bravely ignored the angry crowd and carried out their mission. Published by J. Gurney, New York City. Slightly trimmed corners for period album insertion with minor soiling, else very good.
