Cowell, S.C., June 2, 1863, and reads in part: "...just returned from 5 days paicket from the point of the Island where we could see the rebs as thick as hasty pudding...they come down to the edge of Morris River in the daytime, when wee a re on post at night we are about 80 rods...they are at work a fortifying. They hada bout 500 men at work...We have a plenty of gun boats that are lying all at North Edisto...Commodore Dupont has command of the Navy..." More. VG.
