Autograph Letter Signed, "James Bosworth" 17th Connecticut, WIA & POW at Chancellorsville, 3p. quarto, pencil, Stafford Court House, January 1, 1863, with patriotic regimental cover, it reads in part: "...we have to march both night and day for no one who has never witnessed the movement of a large Army Corps with its hundreds of heavy wagons and artillery can from any conception of the labor and tediousness of a 60 miles march through Virginia in December. It is no uncommon thing to see mules horses and men entirely covered with mud working for hours to get one team extricated from some deep slough....We have three Batteries with us (that is our brigade) and a more exhausted dirty set of men I never saw.....We are in the immediate neighborhood of those Connecticut Regts that took part in the battle at Fredericksburg. The most of our boys have visited them and some have been to see us...They have but little faith in such Generalship. They like Mack’s or Sigel’s caution better than Burnside’s dash without any chance of success..." VG.
