Pair of Autograph Letters Signed by a sharpshooter named James, includes: 2p. quarto, May 8, 1863, Suffolk, Virginia, and reads in part: "...I sent the muzzle of my gun up by Doct. Arms of Panama, which probably has got there before this time, but when this letter reaches you if the gun is not fixed I will only have the gun cut over with the old muzzle on it and have a new hammer and a new globe sight on taht I can raise up a little more if necessary for a long shot. The old one is rather short, but the gunsmith can make it fit some other gun and ought to allow something for it...I think that Perry charges an enormous price for fixing the gun, Fox does not charge near as much...I do not want to pay out toom uch money on the gun all I want is to have it shoot...I would like a telescope but it will cost so much to get all these things I guess I had not best to get one..." More. VG...plus; 6p. octavo, Suffolk, Virginia, May 17, 1863, and reads in part: "...When I last wrote you our forces here or part of them had gone towards Carrsville near the Blackwater under Col. Foster acting Brigadier Gen. since then some more troops have gone and also Gen. Corcoran with a part of his Irish Legion. The object of going out was to hold the rebs in check till our forces could tear up the RR track from Carrville to this place and bring in the Iron rails. News came here that the Rebs were going to tear up the track and remove it to Petersburg, so Gen. Peck sent out our forces to get the start of them and we did and our forces were 12 hours ahead of the rebs and more have taken up several miles of the track and removed the iron this way since they have been out they have had considerable skirmishing with the Rebels. The Rebs tried to drive our men back but not an inch would they budge. Day before yesterday the 112 men engaged with the enemy and lost one killed & two wounded. The one killed was Charles Davis of Harmony of Co. H and one of the wounded was Baily of Co. I wounded in the hand by a buckshot. The Mass 6th have lost quite a number in killed & wounded as also has the 166 & 165 Pa. conscript Regs..." More. VG.
