GETTY, George Washington (1819-1901) Graduated West Point in 1840 and spent his military career as an artillerist. He commanded the artillery of numerous engagements including under Burnside at Antietam; in repulsing Longstreet at Virginia, and in the Gettysburg campaign. He was severely wounded at the Wilderness, but returned to serve with distinction including at Appomattox. Manuscript Letter Signed, "Geo. W. Getty" as Brig. Genl. Comd., 2p. quarto, Head Quarters, 3rd Division, 9th A.C., In the field near Suffolk, Va., May 9, 1863, addressed to General Sprague, it reads in part: "...Since the death of the gallant Col. B. Ringold 103rd Regiment N.Y. Vols, who fell at the head of his Regiment during the Reconnoissance on teh Providence Church Road May 3rd, the Regiment has become somewhat demoralized, there being no Officer, now with the Regiment, to my knowledge capable of commanding it. I have placed, temporarily in command, an officer of another Regiment....Under the leadership of Col. Ringold, the regiment has done fine service, especially in the reconnoisance above referred to..." Fine.
