A great war-date Union volunteer state quota letter, 4pp., 4to., issued by Provost Marshal James B. Fry, War Department, Washington, D. C., [late 1863], addressed to Pennsylvania's assistant Provost Marshal Major C. C. Gilbert concerning that state's quota of troops needed to help fill Lincoln's October 1863 call for fresh troops during Lee's Gettysburg campaign, reading, in part: "The quota of the Eastern Division of the state of Pennsylvania to fill the call of the President for 5000,000 men and to make up deficiencies is as follows: 1st Congressional District 3317…[total] 85, 576…this is exclusive of any deduction on account of credits…and…the numbers to be deducted are as follows…19,367…let these quotas be first made up to January 31st 1864…all men reported to this office up to January 31st 1864…as belonging to the state…have been credited at this office and deducted from the quotas of Congressional Districts as herein assigned…to His Excellency A. G. Curtin, Governor of Pennsylvania…". Signed and made official by Invalid Corps 1st Lt. WILLIAM STONE formerly of the 19th Mass. Vols. who was wounded at the battles of Glendale, Antietam and while helping repulse Pickett's Charge at Gettsyburg on July 3, 1863. Usual soiling, else very good.
