War-date Gettysburg Emergency Militia letter, 2pp. 8vo., written in pencil by Pvt. Sumpter Carty, Co. A, 32nd Penn. Vols. (1st Gray Reserves), Camp Russell, [Carlisle, Pa.], June 22, 1863 concerning soldiering during the Gettysburg campaign. In part: "...so far they are a talking of mustering our in for 6 months. I will go if the rest of my mates go...I have just come off of guard. I was on for 24 hours. Please tell Mr. Slimaman it is a bully life to lead. I never felt better in all my life...please tear this letter up as soon as you...read...it...". Protecting his home state of Pennsylvania, Carty served throughout the Gettysburg campaign and was mustered out on August 1, 1863. Very good.
