Sign In to see what this sold for

CUTLER, Lysander (1807-1866) early settler of Wisconsin, and at the beginning of the Civil war he offered his services to the government being appointed colonel of the 6th Wis. Infantry, July 16, 1861. He speedily brought this regiment into a state of discipline and rendered it one of the best in the service. He was afterwards in command of the famous "Iron Brigade," (Meredith's), of the Army of the Potomac, to which his regiment was attached, and on Nov. 29, 1862, was commissioned brigadier-general. He was brevetted major-general of volunteers, Aug. 19, 1864, for meritorious services, and resigned from the army, June 30, 1865, leaving the service with scars of two wounds upon his body. Autograph Letter Signed, "L. Cutler Brig. Genl. Comdg Brigde." 1-1/4p. quarto, Head Quarters 2 Brid 1 Div 1 AC In Field South Mountain July 9, 1863, addressed to the Adjutant General of the State of New York, and reads in most part: "...I have the melancholy satisfaction of informing you that the four NY Regts in my command the 95, 76, 147th & 14 Brooklyn behaved admirably in the recent engagments at Gettysburg, but their loss is fearful, more than 60 percent of their numbers. It is of the 76th that I wish to speak more. It lost on the 1st 18 officers & 221 men killed, wounded & missing, the first half hour, among the killed was Maj. A.J. Grover who was in command. Of the missing nearly all are probably killed or wounded. The Regt was brought off by Capt John E. Cook of Co. I & has since been under his command & well has he discharged his duty. Col. Wainwright has been discharged & I request that Capt. Cook be at once appointed Col. of the Regmt. Lieut. Col. Livingstone although in the corps has not been with the Regt since last Autum..." VG.
