SAXTON, Rufus (1824-1908)Union general who helped Nathaniel Lyon remove the disloyal Missouri State Guard from the arsenal at St. Louis. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his defense of Harper's Ferry. Later his principle occupation was enlisting Negroes into the Federal Army. Autograph Letter Signed, "R. Saxton Brig. Genl." 3p. octavo, Beaufort, South Carolina, August 16, 1863, addressed to Colonel W.W.H. Davis, 104th Pennsylvania Vols, and reads " I am sorry that I cannot oblige you in regard to Capt. Taylor but it is impossible for me to spare him. My duties as Military Governor keep Capt. Rand occupied & I must have Capt. Taylor in the Military Dept. I only consented before becuase you were at the Post. My duties are so varied & peculiar that I not only have to work hard myself but I keep my whole staff at work. I hope soon to hear of the capture of Charleston & doubt not I shall. It will be a pleasant thing for you to remember in the future that you have borne so prominent a part in the capture of the great stronghold of treason. ..." Fine.
