Autograph Letter Signed, "Elias L. Buterbaugh" 8p. octavo, August 7, 1864, and reads in part: "...there was a middling brisk fight in front of Petersburg on Thursday. The rebels undermined one of our forts and blowed it up and then they charged on it but tehy got the worst of the bargain there was one of the rebel Lt. deserted their army and come in to our lines and told us about them undermining the fort we had all the guns out of it and had built a mass fort back of the one they had undermined and put wooden guns in so that they did not know we had found it out then we waited till they come up close and opened on them and sent them back flying..."
