Autograph Letter Signed, "John T. Baker" 15th Maine Infantry, 4p. octavo, on U.S. Christian Commission lettersheet, December 13, 1864, with cover, it reads in part: "...we went to...one hundred twenty miles from Martinsburg. The rebels had been in there and burnt the place they left a burnt up looking place. They left the onions and potatoes all roasted for us. We went in to the fort and camped the first night then we picked our tents near the old tents that they burnt...it was a sad sight to see the guns that they burnt and government property...the rebels destroyed a good deal of property. They would of destroyed the rail road if they dared to stay long enough but they took what they could carry and what prisoners they could but half of them fell out of their ranks and they come in to there burnt camps..."
