Manuscript Document Signed, "J.H. Mark A.A.A.G." 1p. quarto, Head Quarters, Department West Virginia, Near Woodstock, Virginia, May 27, 1864, issued by Command of General Hunter, it reads in part: "...The General Commanding directs that all servicable horses and mules in the country through which this command is passing, be seized for the benefit of the U.S. Government, and immediately turned over to the acting Provost Marshal General of Dept. to be by him transferred to the Chief Quartermaster of forces in the field, from whom they can be obtained upon proper requisition. This order is premptory, and officers, or others violating the same and privately appropriating the arrivals sezied to their own use, will be held strictly accountable. The acting Provost Marshal General of the Dept. will exercise a strict supervision over all horses sent to the rear by returningt temas or otherwise..." VG.
