Autograph Letter Signed by Capt. Alick M. Hayward, who served with the 5th Mass Infantry & the 24th Massachusetts Infantry, WIA at Deep Bottom, 4p. octavo, Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, January 15, 1865, and rads in part: "...I have had quite a musical entertainment this evning by the squad of ‘darkies’ that I had stop here tonight. I noticed one carrying a guitar and this evening I had him come in to my quarters and play for us, and he did play splendidly & no mistake. There was a ‘Banjo’ player came along a few nights ago and I had him play for the benefit of some company that I had that night. I have got a tough crowd of conscripts tonight. I have got one of them tied up by the thumbs and another doing ‘horse’ up about twenty feet from the ground on a very small pole. They liked to killed one fellow in cmap, they knocked him down and robbed him of all his money and kicked him in the face...I wish that I could put the rope aroun his neck instead of his thumbs..."
