Autograph Letter Signed by Daniel E. Worthley, 26th Massachusetts Infantry, taken POW near Newton, Virginia, 3p. octavo, on Sanitary Commission lettersheet, Winchester, Virginia, April 8, 1865, and reads in part: "...We left Camp Parole last Tues. I arrived here last night. The people along the R. Road all were celebrating our recent victories and their houses were illuminated in great style and I guess that everybody is glad that the war is near an end. There is some talk of our Regt. being discharged so perhaps I may get home again sometime this year at any rate. I hope that the fighting is nearly done....This place is where we had the fight last Sept....The papers are full of good news and I judge that the war is about over and possibly I may not write many more letters from the front..."
