Autograph Letter Signed, "J.W. Stebbins Co. K 9th Va." 3p. octavo, pencil, Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865, and reads in part: "...The [?] city has fallen and the black clouds of smoke from the burning ruins are rising in the heavens and the pickets from teh 9th Va. were the first ones into the Rebel Capital. Denny Mason Bush and Smith are among the pickets. We are in the works in the suburbs of the city. The enemy evacuated last night, and to have heard of no fighting at all today this side of the river. The rebels fired the arsenal &c the bridge across the river james also. We heard the shell in the arsnal bursting for 1/2 an hour....the citizens are glad to see the Union soldiers coming. Jeff preached in the Baptist church yesterday and while preaching & lecturing he received a note from Gen. Lee and at once quit and took the cars for some more place more distant...dispatches from Grant we learn that they had captured some 15000 prisoners and any quantity of guns & c. It was just 5 mins of 9 this morning when we halted in this fort and planted our colors on the parrapit giving three cheers for the fall of Richmond..." VG.
