View Catalog

Description

A very rare war-date hardbound tribute to the life of a Union color bearer Francis A. Clary 31st Massachusetts Vol. who was killed in action while advancing his regiment's national colors at the battle of Port Hudson, entitled: "THE COLOR-BEARER: FRANCIS A. CLARY" written by Sophia Pool and published by the American Tract Society, New York, totaling 108 page, 18mo., owned by Calvin W. Poole who served in the 35th Mass. and was a seaman on the ironclad USS Mahopac. Tipped onto the inside front cover is a slip of paper in ink that reads: "Francis Clary was engaged to Sophia A. Pool. He was killed during the Civil War while acting as color bearer" while a second loose period pencil note, reads, in part: "The father of our Chief Engineer, Mr. Chever is a Presbyterian minister and he send up [to] Marshall packages most every time the steamer comes up. Among the books & papers in the last package was two copies of the 'Color bearer', neatly in paper covers. He will be most interested in knowing that my sister wrote it. He is a fine young man of inflexible temperance principles-pious-& cool & collected in danger. I like him first-rate…C. W. Pool." Very light wear with tight binding, else very good. A great piece of Civil War history.
