Retained copy letter by General Montgomery Meigs (1816 - 1892) Union brigadier general and Quartermaster General, he buried his son in Mary Lee's rose garden at Arlington, 2p. quarto, Quartermaster General's Office, Washington, D.C., March 21, 1866, addressed to "Hon. E.M. Stanton, Secretary of War", and reads in part: "...I have the honor to submit herewith the application of Mrs. Caroline V. Sayre, for the restoration of her property in Montgomery, Ala. now occupied by the United States, and for rent for the same during such occupation. From the statement of Mrs. Sayre it appears that her property was taken possession of May 9, 1865, and used as offices for Head Quarters of Maj. Gen. A.J. Smith, and has been so used since, that no rent has been paid as was promised in an alleged order of Gen. Smith and that she was pardoned by the President last September. The President of the United States refers the papers to this office for report as to why rent has not been paid and why can it not be paid. In answer to this inquiry, the attention of the Secretary of War is respectfully invited to the decisions of the War Department in the case of Willard for rent of a hospital in Murfreesboro, Tenn. the case of Lewis for rent of a Wharf in Charleston, S.C. and the opinion of the Judge Advocate General in the case of A.H. Brown for rent of certain property in Vicksburg, Miss..." Fine.
