"...The right to hold Slaves was granted them but

Autograph Letter Signed, "S.N. Hane" 4p. folio, Canyon Creek, May 3, 1868, and reads in part: "...Your kind letter of Apl the 10th devoted so ardently in the defence of your Party, has been read, and allow me sir to congratulate you in your patriotic and untiring efforts to comprehend the many intricate questions growing out of the late Rebellion and which the National Representatives to Congress at Washington are endeavoring to dispose of. I do not propose to answer your argument in detail as it would require more time than I care to devote to the subject and more knowledge than I posess to expose party intrigue. The majorit yof the voting population have but a limite knowledge of legislating and financing for the mutual benefit of the whole Nation. Such persons must confine themselves mainly to facts and trust to there Representatives in Congress whose duty it is to enact laws for the mutual benefit of all. It is presumed by me that no political party have ever controlled legislation at Washington yet who have not sought to leave agood record behind them, unless we except southern democratic representatives who aided rebellion. I have no doubt but that they were impeled to the act of secession through motives to secure that right awarded to them by the compact mutually entered into when all the Colonies combined and formed one grand Republic. The right to hold Slaves was granted them but by acts passed by State legislatures and memorials sent to congress and a failure on the part of states to execute the laws for the protection of the granted rights of Slavery the South claim that the compact is broken and that the right of secession is apparant. They adopted the ordinance of secession as the only alternative to rescue their slave property from eventual strangulation as they were already surrounded by a cordon of free states who spared no pains to evade provisions of the law made in view of their protection and hamper them down in every conceivable way fully determined to crush out the last vestige of slavery at any cost. If these charges are doubted I can fully substanciate them as they can be supported by an abundance of evidence...." Much more in this vein.
