ADAMS, F. C. The Washers and Scrubbers. The Men Who Robbed Them. Washington: Judd & Detweiler, 1878. 39 pp. Grey printed wrappers. Corner chip. The "washers and scrubbers" are the ex-slaves who placed their savings in the Freedman's Bank. The "men who robbed them" are the "high society" Republicans who dominated Washington during the Grant administration and whom Adams, rather convincingly, charges with defrauding the Bank. A fragile item and a scarce title detailing the frauds perpetrated against the freedmen who deposited their hard-earned funds in the Reconstruction-era Freedmen's Bank.
