MOULTRIE, William (1731-1805) American general in the Revolution. Represented South Carolina in teh Continental Congress in 1775. He successfully defended Sullivan’s Island against a British fleet in Charleston Harbor in 1776. The fort there [Fort Moultrie] was named in his honor. He defeated the British at Beaufort and successfully defended Charleston in 1779. Later governor of South Carolina. Partly-printed Document Signed, "Willm. Moultrie" 1p. large folio, being a land grant for 640 acres for Edward Wilkinson on Bear Creek. About VG.
