James McHenry Signed Letter with Good Indian Conte

MCHENRY, James (1753-1816) an early American statesman. McHenry was a signer of the United States Constitution from Maryland and the namesake of Fort McHenry, the bombardment of which inspired the American national anthem Star-Spangled Banner. He was also a delegate to the Continental Congress from Maryland, and the third United States Secretary of War from January 27, 1796 to May 13, 1800, under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Letter signed, "James McHenry," to Samuel Hodgdon (Superintendent of Military Stores also appointed by Washington), 1pp.,War Office, January 5, 1797, in part, "As on waggon ... will not be sufficient to transport ... the Indian Cheifs to Knoxville, I request that yuou will be pleased to provide another ..." Continues, "The three horses you have received from the Indians, you will also please return to them."
