Autograph Letter Signed, "H.R. Clum" 2p. quarto, on Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs, lettersheet, Washington, September 25, 1873, addressed to Agent Edward Palmer of the Grand River Agency, and reads in part: "...The enclosed is a copy of a letter from Agent Tappan with complaints regarding certian horses and mules allege to have been stolen from the Arickaree, Grosventre and Maudan Indains by the Sioux of your Agency. You will inquire into this matter, with a view to ascertain, so far as practicable the facts and circumstances of the case, and, if any of the stolen horses should be found in the possesion of the Indians under your charge, exert your influence and use your best efforts for their restoration to those from whom they were stolen..." Includes the copy letter by John Tappan which reads in part: "...At the request of these Indians, I would respectfully ask if there is anyway in which they can be repaid for horses stolen by the Sioux of the Grand River Agencies. Since the 19th of May 1871 fifty three head of horses and five mules have been stolen from here by parties of Sioux, at various times, in every instance the parties who carried off the stock are known, ie the person who was leader is known...The horses will average about $75 each...Mules...100..."
