George Armfield (fl. 1840-1875) The stolen candle, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1872, 52 cm x 61 cm George Armfield Smith was a London sporting artist. He was a keen sportsman and this affinity with his subject helped to produce convincing and animated studies. He chiefly painted dogs, usually terriers in pursuit of either pheasants or rats. He was a prolific artist and exhibited widely including thirty two works at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1862
