1948 Dodge Custom Series Convertible
Description
102hp, 230 cu. in. L-head inline six-cylinder engine, Stromberg carburetor, three-speed column-shift transmission, independent front coil-spring and rear semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 119.5"
To meet the growing new car demands of the American public, in 1948 Chrysler opened a new Dodge assembly plant in San Leandro, California. This would also be the last year for the prewar styled Dodge models. Differentiating themselves from Dodge's lesser offerings, the Custom Series featured Air Foam front seat cushions, dual electric windshield wipers and chrome window moldings as standard equipment.
The 1948 Dodge Custom Series Convertible offered here has just 8,134 original miles on its odometer and aside from the paint and brightwork it remains highly original. The black convertible top is well tailored and was replaced at time of restoration. Overall, the condition of the exterior is quite impressive, showing only minor imperfections upon close examination. Dress-up equipment on the 1948 Dodge Custom Series Convertible includes a driver's side spotlight, twin driving lights, a grille guard, overriders, rear fender stone guards, dual mirrors, and full wheel discs.
Much of Dodge Custom's original interior, finished in green and black, was retained due to its excellent condition. Interior amenities include a clock, radio and Comfort Master heater. It appears as though the strong six-cylinder engine has never been disassembled, having only needed new belts, hoses and wiring to keep it running in peak form.
This high-style Dodge Custom Series Convertible was one of only 9,500 built and originally assembled in Los Angeles in 1948. While it is rare to come across any Custom Series Convertible from 1948, it is virtually unheard of to find such a highly original, low mileage example, such as the one offered here. For those looking for the more rounded lines of a prewar car with the mechanical upgrades of a postwar model this stylish Dodge is ideal.
