1937 Chrysler Imperial Business Coupe

Sign In to see what this sold for

110 bhp, 273.8 cu. in. inline eight-cylinder engine, single two-barrel carburetor, three-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 121"

In the wake of the Airflow debacle, Chrysler returned to more conservative styling for 1937. The C-14 series closely resembled the Chrysler Royal, but with a longer hood and cowl treatment to accommodate the long inline eight-cylinder engine. The Business Coupe, priced from $1,030, was advertised as a fast and spacious automobile for long-distance travelling salesmen and business executives. However, in spite of its practicality and pleasing lines, a mere 1,075 examples of the Imperial Business Coupe left the factory in 1937.

The 1937 Chrysler Imperial Business Coupe displayed here has an older cosmetic restoration. While the polished maroon finish appears very good from a distance, minor scratching and other imperfections are apparent upon close inspection. The chrome has been selectively refinished as needed, and like the paintwork, shows slight surface scratching. Otherwise, the solid, straight and attractive body displays no notable flaws.

The restored interior compartment features brown cloth upholstery that is free from defects or wear, and highlights an original-appearing steering wheel and a beautifully restored wood grain dash. Interior amenities include a floor-mounted shifter, a heater, and an original radio. The engine bay displays an older cosmetic restoration, and while not show-quality, it remains presentable. The engine block itself is finished in the proper shade of metallic silver. While the restored undercarriage is not detailed and shows evidence of road use, it is solid and houses a new stainless-steel exhaust system.

The Imperial line will always represent the pinnacle of Chrysler luxury and engineering. This 1937 Chrysler Imperial Business Coupe is a very solid and attractive example of a particularly rare model, and is sure to please its next fortunate owner.
