STALKARTT, Marmaduke. Naval Architecture; or the Rudiments and Rules of Ship Building Exemplified in a Series of Draughts and Plans with Observations Tending to Further Improvement of that Important Art. London: J. Boydell, 1781. 2 volumes. Atlas is in elephant folio (575 x 445 mm), text volume in oblong folio (374 x 240 mm). Atlas illustrated with 14 plates (lacking no. 11), text volume 231 pp., frontispiece illustrated. Text bound in rececent antiqued calf and marbled boards, atlas cloth backed with paper boards, leather labels on spines. Condition: frontispiece and title page of text volume waterstained, library stamped. Very little is known about Stalkartt. He started as a shipwright apprentice and worked at the Royal Navy Yard in Deptford but seems to have been able to finance his own shipyard later in his career.
