ZIGLER POTTERY (ATTRIBUTED), TIMBERVILLE, VA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE JAR, approximately 2 gallon, rounded rim with three bold rings below, distinctive brushed cobalt horizontal leafy vine decoration full round. Possibly Andrew Coffman, the first potter recorded to have worked at John Zigler's pottery. Second quarter 19th century. 10 1/2" h, 9 1/2" dia rim.
Reference: See Evans/Suter, p. 4, pl. 1, for a group of stoneware all featuring this distinctive decoration.
Provenance: The Glick estate, Broadway, VA.Green Valley Auctions, Inc., 1988. The M. Otto Zigler estate, Timberville, VA.
Note: This jar was part of a group of pottery originally discovered in the cellar of the John Zigler homestead in Timberville, VA and sold through our gallery in 1988. The original Zigler pottery site was located directly across the road from the circa 1810 brick house.

Condition report

Undamaged except for a very shallow rim chip
