LEAD AND COPPER-GLAZED SLIP-WASHED MOLDED EARTHENWARE PITCHER, POSSIBLY BELL FAMILY, octagonal form with "Old Man of the North" mask under spout, strap handle with faux rivet in lower terminal. Possibly by one of the Bell family, Strasburg, VA. Second half 19th century. 8 1/2" h, 5" dia rim.
Reference: . Provenance: Property of a Midwestern collector. Note: This pitcher appears to be copied from the Rockingham-glazed example illustrated by Jane Perkins Claney, {{Rockingham Ware in American Culture, 1830-1930}}, p.49, fig. 18, which is attributed to the United States Pottery Company, Bennington, VT, 1849-1858. It is documented that several other examples of Rockingham/Bennington pitchers were copied by members of the Bell family in Strasburg. The glaze and faux rivet head seen on the mask pitcher offered here would support a Strasburg, VA attribution. Condition reportRestorations to rim and spout chips, handle tabs, and a short hairline off rim
