ROCKINGHAM CO., VA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE JAR, dashed "2" gallon capacity stamp, straight-sided form with a slight shoulder, squared rim, rolled handles, and a single incised shoulder ring, brushed cobalt feather decoration full round, additional cobalt at handle terminals. Attributed to Emanuel Suter or Joseph Silber, at Suter's New Erection Pottery, or possibly Silber at Rawley Springs. 1866-1890. 12 1/4" h, 7 1/4" dia rim.
Reference: Parallels Evans/Suter, p. 63, fig. 90, and p. 70, fig. 108. Provenance: Collection of Elizabeth and Frank Suter. Note: According to Evans/Suter, this "2" capacity stamp, comprised of tiny dashes, is a well traveled Rockingham Co. mark. They illustrate it used on seven different pieces, one signed Suter, two attributed to Silber, and four attributed to John D. Heatwole. An eighth piece has been seen which is signed Woods and Silber. Of course the connecting factor between all of these enterprises is journeyman potter Joseph Silber, who was either employed at or operating each of the shops, usually on multiple occasions. Condition reportUndamaged except for some light flaking at rim, short exterior only firing crack above base
