ELIZABETH MERCER, BERKELEY (CO.), VA NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, "Elizabeth Mercer is my name Virginia is / My station berkeley is my dwelling place / And christ is my salVation when i am dead / And laid in grave And All my bones are rot / ten when this you remember me least i / should be forgoten - the lords Prayrs below" in six lines, above the Lord's Prayer in eight lines, another two line religious verse and four lines of alphabet and numbers, all above a row of flower-filled urns and a double-chimney two-story house with two doves perched on the roof, not dated. First quarter 19th century. 22" x 16".

Note: Preliminary research has located an Elizabeth Mercer, the fifth child of Joshua Weldon Mercer and Margaret Nesbitt, born in 1802 in Frederick Co., VA which borders Berkeley Co., WV to the south. The Mercer's eighth and finial child was born in Frederick Co. in 1808 and it is possible that the family moved to Berkeley Co. shortly thereafter.
