LICHTENSTEIN, ROY
American 1923-1997 Title: "Shipboard Girl", lithograph in colors on lightweight white paper,1965, unpublished proof on thin poster paper, aside from the unnumbered signed edition estimated at about 300,, ,as published by Castelli Gallery, New York, ,
Size info: 27 x 20 1/4 in (68.6 x 51.5 cm), , ,
Condition: In very good condition, the colors good, slightly uneven in areas and slightly softer from the poster edition on cold press coated paper. Minor skinning verso from previous hinging.
Framing: Sold unframed,
Literature: Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on the graphics of Lichtenstein by Corlett, number II.6,
Comments: From a small collection of miscellanous trial proofs produced at the time of the original printings. This work has been compared with the example in the National Gallery in Washington donated by Lichtenstein and his wife. It is fully consistent with that impression in every way except that the colors are softer. This is probably explained by the fact that the final version was on a coated, hard surface paper which allows the inks to sit on top of the sheet and not be absorbed and thus dulled. The present example is on a more absorbent paper and probably accounts for the slight dulling of the colors here. It is not unsual for trial proofs to be run on different papers for a variety of reasons typical to the circumstances in preparing an edition for the final run. This work is identical (same paper) to the signed examples recently sold for $50,000-$70,000, but is unsigned.,
