sun, moon, star, compass and square on white ground, embroidered on flap "William Richmond" above "M" flanked by trowel and mallet over "1789", silk on damask weave silk, attributed to Caswell County, North Carolina, late 18th century, 13-1/4 x 14-3/4 in., mounted on linen board. Fading, water stains, losses to trim, lacking tie or sash. U.S. Census population schedule includes at least four William Richmonds in Caswell County, North Carolina, prior to 1840, any one of whom could be the original owner of this apron.
