both oil on canvas, attributed to William Garl Browne, Virginia, 1823-1894: one of John Phiefer Young, 36-1/4 x 29-1/2 in., [lined with wax and linen, restretched on new stretcher, restored tear with associated retouch, (photo prior to restoration with lot), crackle,] original fine 19th century gilt wood and composition sand-stenciled cove-molding frame with label for "G. Pelman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania"; Sarah Virginia Young nee Burton, wife of Major Robert Simonton Young and daughter of Alfred Burton of Virginia, probably signed verso original canvas as indicated on old label verso "Wm. G. Browne, Pin. A.D. 1866", various labels verso from UNC-Chapell Hill, "…placed on deposit by Burton H. Smith/9 September 1947", 33-5/8 x 28-3/4 in., [lined with wax and linen, restretched on old pine stretcher, probable retouch in background obscured by varnish,] original 19th century gilt wood and composition frame, [resurfaced.] Provenance: By descent in family to consignor; lot is accompanied by genealogical information on sitters and family. The Young family were benefactors of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Both on loan previously to UNC-Chapel Hill; Private Collection. John Phiefer Young was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, the son of Major Robert Simonton Young and Sarah Virginia Young. He served in the Civil War after enlisting at age 16 and was captured near Richmond, Virginia, in 1862, and confined for two months before he was exchanged. He died at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863.
