(Virginia/Italy, 1808-1890), boy rescuing lamb on rocky cliff in the Roman campagna, signed verso canvas "John G. Chapman/Rome/1868(?)" and inscribed "For Rev. Dr. Lyman", oil on canvas, oval 25-1/2 x 18-1/2 in.; original gilt wood and composition oval frame with frame plate. Lined with transparent liner, restretched on original stretcher, crackle, very minor scattered points of retouch; frame with pest damage, minor losses, original surface.
