(Arthur Gordon Smith, New York, New York, 20th century): Egyptian or Aztec stylized motifs with figures, papyrus, jackals, birds, circa 1920s, multi-media on fabric laid on paneling, possibly a study for a mural, unframed, each 77-1/2 x 22-3/4 in., 91 in. total width; accompanied by copies of letters from Illustration House, New York City and the attribution to Arthur Smith. Toning, one panel slightly darker. Provenance: The Estate of the Late Margaret D. Gruger, Anderson, South Carolina Arthur Smith grew up in New York City, attended the Art Students League and began a career as an advertising artist. He is credited as having designed murals, illustrated books, magazine covers and advertising art before becoming an instructor at the Famous Artists School.
