Early 20 Century Songwriters Romantic Archive, included is an assortment of letters and sonnets written by Hugo Gordon Duval, a musician, New York society man and president of the Park Avenue Association. In his music, he expressed his love to Maddah Craven, a dancer who, ultimately, married another man. Lot of 12 includes: ca 1921 2pp sheet music, original copy, entitled "I Learnt About Music From You, Dear", written in regards to his love interest Maddah, in pencil and pen, 9.5" x 12.5," PLUS a 3pp finished printed copy of the song mentioned above, 8.25" x 10", PLUS a ca 1921 3pp partially printed sheet music entitled "I Only Hope" You're Happy Now I've Gone, bound in a plastic and canvas case embossed with A merry Christmas and Happy New Year/Maddah from Hugo on cover, PLUS a 12" x 14" silver print of H.G. Duval, autographed on lower right margin with "And then-, There came a woman"/H Gordon Duval/March 25th 1921, PLUS two 5" x 7" silver prints of a smiling Maddah, PLUS two love letters and a Christmas card written to Maddah, PLUS a ca 1925 39pp illustrated self wrap entitled Park Avenue Social Bulletin containing an article written by Duval about The Younger Degeneration, PLUS a 4pp printed pamphlet of "When A Feller Needs A Friend, a sonnet written by Duval, PLUS a ca 1921 1p printed 8.5" x 11" sonnet, entitled If You'll Be My Lolly I will Be Your Pop, written by Howard Johnson/William Rose/Irving Bibo, AND a newspaper clipping of an auto accident entitled H.G. Duval Hurt In Auto Accident.
Hugo Duval eventually married another woman. Maddah, who never divorced, eventually resided on a farm, living apart from her husband for most of their marriage.
