34th President. Typed letter signed as President. One page, quarto, The White House, July 21, 1953, to Rev. Samuel McCrea Cavert, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches. The letter reads in full, "I am deeply grateful to you for the message you sent me on behalf of the National Council of Churches and the members of its constituency. It is heartening to receive such messages as yours upholding American principles of justice". Eisenhower was raised in a strict religious environment but did not formally join a church until he became President. He believed in the power of prayer and divine guidance. As President, he instituted the interdenominational White House Prayer Breakfast and the practice of opening cabinet meetings with a prayer. Signed, "Dwight D. Eisenhower". A "received" stamp in the upper right, not affecting text. In very good condition.
